The Chinese Diaspora and the Politics of Exclusion

Chinese migration reshaped Southeast Asia, the Pacific and the Americas in the 19th century. Long-standing trade communities in places like Malacca and Batavia grew into a wide Nanyang, or Southern Ocean, diaspora, while gold rushes in California from 1849 and Australia from 1851 drew Chinese miners across the Pacific. Chinese workers built much of the Central Pacific Railroad, completed in 1869.

As their numbers grew, they faced violence and discriminatory laws: the United States passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, the first major US law to bar a group by nationality, and Canada imposed a head tax from 1885. Chinese communities responded by forming associations, legal challenges and Chinatowns that offered support and preserved culture. This history shows how globalization brought people together and also produced fearful backlashes that shaped modern immigration law.
