Assimilation, Multiculturalism and Integration Debates

Societies receiving migrants have debated how newcomers and existing residents should live together. The assimilation model, captured by Israel Zangwill's 1908 play The Melting Pot, expected migrants to blend into one national culture over time. Multiculturalism, adopted as official policy by Canada in 1971 and later by Australia, instead encourages groups to keep distinct identities within shared laws. France's republican model emphasizes equal citizenship and secularism, laïcité, and in 2004 banned conspicuous religious symbols in state schools.

Quebec has promoted interculturalism, stressing dialogue around a shared French-speaking culture. Supporters of multiculturalism argue it respects diversity and dignity, while critics argue it can weaken shared identity or separate communities; supporters of assimilation stress unity, while critics see pressure to abandon heritage. Most countries combine elements of several models, and students should weigh evidence rather than assume one is obviously right.
