Hybridity, Creolization and Transculturation

Scholars have developed several terms to describe what happens when cultures meet and mix. In 1940 Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz proposed transculturation, arguing that contact produces new cultural forms rather than a simple loss or gain, using the histories of tobacco and sugar in Cuba as his example. Creolization, drawn from Caribbean history, describes new cultures formed from many sources, a theme developed by the Martinican writer Édouard Glissant.

Postcolonial theorist Homi Bhabha described a third space where colonized and colonizing cultures interact and produce hybrid identities. Hybrid forms can be seen in Mughal architecture such as the Taj Mahal, which blends Persian and Indian traditions, or in the Spanish-Arab Mudéjar style. Critics warn that celebrating hybridity can hide inequalities of power in which mixing occurs. These ideas challenge the notion of pure cultures and show that mixing has always been normal.
