McLuhan's Global Village

In The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962) and Understanding Media (1964), Canadian scholar Marshall McLuhan argued that electronic media were turning the world into a global village. He believed television and radio let people experience distant events instantly and emotionally, much like villagers who all know each other's business. His famous phrase, the medium is the message, meant that the form of a technology shapes society more than the content it carries.

McLuhan's ideas appeared just as Telstar relayed the first live transatlantic television in 1962. Critics argued that the global village was unequal, since many people lacked access, and that closeness could also produce conflict rather than harmony. Others note that McLuhan seemed to anticipate the internet decades early. His work remains a starting point for asking how media change the way people think and relate.
