The CNN Effect and 24-Hour News

CNN launched on 1 June 1980 as the first 24-hour television news channel, and its live coverage from Baghdad during the 1991 Gulf War made it a global presence. Commentators began to speak of a CNN effect: the idea that dramatic images of suffering could push governments to act, as in the US intervention in Somalia in 1992, or to withdraw, as after the deaths of American soldiers in Mogadishu in 1993.

Researchers such as Piers Robinson later found the effect was real but limited, mattering most when governments had not settled their own policy. Other networks soon challenged CNN's perspective; Al Jazeera, launched in Qatar in 1996, offered Arab viewers coverage from a different angle. The rise of round-the-clock news raised questions about speed versus accuracy and about whose viewpoint dominates. It shows that global media are actors in world politics, not just mirrors of it.
