Socrates has been admired, criticized and reinvented for over two thousand years. The Stoics and Cynics saw him as a model of virtue independent of fortune, and early Christian writers such as Justin Martyr praised him as someone who sought truth before Christianity. Renaissance humanists treated him as a hero of free inquiry. Critics have offered other views. Some ancient Athenians saw him as undermining tradition and democracy, and the journalist I. F. Stone argued in 1988 that Socrates was hostile to democracy.

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche accused him of elevating cold reason over instinct. Defenders reply that Socrates obeyed the law, served as a soldier and refused to help the Thirty arrest an innocent man. Weighing these views shows how a single historical figure can carry different meanings for different ages, and why historians read later portraits as evidence about their authors as well as about Socrates.
