Sputnik and the Start of the Space Race

On 4 October 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, a metal sphere about 58 centimetres wide that broadcast radio beeps as it orbited the Earth. The achievement shocked Americans, partly because the rocket that launched it could also carry nuclear weapons across continents. A month later Sputnik 2 carried the dog Laika into orbit; she died during the flight. The first American attempt, Vanguard, exploded on the launch pad in December 1957, but Explorer 1 reached orbit on 31 January 1958 and detected radiation belts around the Earth.

The United States responded by creating NASA in 1958 and passing the National Defense Education Act, which funded science and language education. The space race became a contest for prestige and influence between two political systems. Sputnik shows how technology can become a symbol in international competition, driving investment in education and research.
