The Dawes Act and Its Effects

The Dawes Act of 1887 was a significant piece of legislation aimed at assimilating Native Americans into American society. By breaking up tribal lands into smaller individual plots, the government intended to promote farming and land ownership among Native Americans.

However, the act resulted in the loss of millions of acres of tribal land and disrupted traditional ways of life. Many Native Americans faced challenges adapting to this new system, leading to both social and economic hardships.
