National Parks: Preserving the West

The establishment of national parks in the United States marked a pivotal effort in the conservation and preservation of the natural landscape, particularly in the West. Beginning with the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the movement aimed to protect unique ecosystems and natural beauty from exploitation and degradation.

National parks became sanctuaries for wildlife and offered a space for recreation and education for the public. The conservation efforts represented a growing awareness of the need to preserve the environment amid the rapid industrialization and westward expansion of the late 19th century.
