Hawaii's Path to Statehood

Hawaii's path to statehood was a complex journey driven by both local and national interests. Initially a sovereign kingdom, Hawaii became a U. S. territory in 1898 following the annexation, which many Hawaiians opposed. The push for statehood gained momentum after World War II, as the islands contributed significantly to the war effort and showcased their strategic importance in the Pacific.

Ultimately, Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state of the United States on August 21, 1959, reflecting a culmination of social, political, and economic factors that shaped its unique identity within the union.
