The Age of Jackson

The Age of Jackson (1829-1837) was characterized by the rise of populism and the expansion of democratic ideals in American politics. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, championed the common man and positioned himself as a leader for the 'ordinary citizen,' advocating for increased suffrage and political participation.

His presidency saw significant events such as the Indian Removal Act, which forcibly relocated Native American tribes from their ancestral lands in the Southeast to designated territories west of the Mississippi River, igniting a contentious debate over states' rights and federal authority. The era also witnessed the emergence of the two-party system, with the Democratic Party solidifying its place in American politics.
