The Dutch Golden Age: Art for a Merchant Market

In the 1600s the Dutch Republic, newly independent from Spain and enriched by trade, produced paintings on an extraordinary scale. Calvinist churches did not commission religious images, so artists sold to merchants, craftsmen and civic groups instead. This open market encouraged specialized genres: landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, scenes of everyday life and portraits. Rembrandt van Rijn's 'Night Watch' (1642) turned a group portrait of a civic militia company into a dramatic scene of movement and light.

Johannes Vermeer painted quiet interiors, such as women reading letters by windows, with exquisite light. Still lifes of luxury goods displayed global trade, including Chinese porcelain and spices from the Dutch East India Company's network, sometimes with reminders of mortality. Historians note this prosperity was linked to colonial trade and, in some cases, the slave trade, which shaped Dutch wealth.
