Historians Debate the Causes of the Revolution

Why the Revolution happened has been argued over for more than two centuries. In the mid-20th century, the dominant 'social' or Marxist interpretation, associated with Georges Lefebvre and Albert Soboul, saw it as a revolution of the bourgeoisie overthrowing a feudal aristocracy, with peasants and urban workers joining in.

From the 1950s, 'revisionist' historians such as Alfred Cobban and later François Furet challenged this, showing that nobles and wealthy commoners often shared investments, lifestyles and ideas, and that many revolutionary leaders were lawyers and officials rather than capitalists.

Later historians, such as Lynn Hunt and Keith Baker, emphasised political culture: language, symbols and ideas about sovereignty. Many historians now combine these approaches, stressing the financial crisis as trigger, long-term social tensions, and the political choices made in 1788–89. Comparing interpretations shows how historians' questions shape their answers.
