Weighing the Revolution: Liberty, Violence and Legacy

Assessing the French Revolution means weighing achievements against costs. Its achievements included the end of feudal privilege, equality before the law, religious toleration, civil rights for Protestants and Jews, the first abolition of slavery by a major European power, and a lasting language of rights and popular sovereignty. Its costs included the Terror, the Vendée, years of war across Europe and a turn to authoritarian rule under Napoleon, who also restored slavery.

Interpretations differ: some historians see violence as arising mainly from circumstances such as war and counter-revolution, while others locate it in revolutionary ideas about unity and the will of the people. Historians also now place Haiti at the centre of the story, showing how enslaved people pushed universal rights further than Paris intended. The Revolution's legacy is contested precisely because its ideals still shape how people judge governments today.
