Then & Now

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Knowing this makes you a better voter when you grow up.

The process of how a bill becomes a law is a fundamental aspect of the American legislative system. Initially, a bill is introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. Once introduced, it undergoes committee review and debate, where amendments can be made. If the bill passes in one house, it then moves to the other house for consideration. If both houses approve it, the bill is sent to the President, who can either sign it into law, veto it, or allow it to become law without a signature if not acted upon within ten days. This intricate process ensures that legislation is thoroughly examined before becoming law.

Key Facts

1

A bill must be approved by both the House and Senate to become law.

2

The President can veto a bill, but Congress can override that veto with a two-thirds majority.

3

Bills can be introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate.
