Money in Politics: Campaign Finance Rules

Elections cost money, and how campaigns are funded raises questions of fairness and corruption. Countries regulate political money in four main ways: limits on donations, limits on spending, disclosure of donors, and public funding of parties or campaigns. Approaches differ sharply. The UK caps national party spending in election campaigns and bans paid political advertising on television and radio. Germany has provided public funding to parties since 1959.

In the United States, the Supreme Court has treated campaign spending as protected speech: Buckley v. Valeo (1976) struck down limits on candidates' own spending, and Citizens United v. FEC (2010) allowed independent political spending by corporations and unions. Supporters of strict rules argue they prevent wealthy interests from buying influence and level the playing field. Opponents argue spending limits restrict free expression and can protect incumbents. Every system balances equality, liberty and transparency differently.
