Dignity Across Traditions: A Shared Ethic?

Supporters of universal rights often point out that many religious and philosophical traditions teach some form of reciprocity, sometimes called the Golden Rule. Confucius's Analects advise not imposing on others what you would not want for yourself. Rabbi Hillel taught that what is hateful to you, you should not do to your neighbour; the Gospel of Matthew tells followers to treat others as they would wish to be treated; and a well-known hadith in Islamic tradition says no one truly believes until they wish for others what they wish for themselves.

The southern African idea of ubuntu stresses that a person becomes fully human through other people. When UNESCO surveyed thinkers worldwide in 1947, it found broad agreement on many practical rights despite deep disagreement about their foundations. Critics caution that shared moral sayings do not mean traditions agree on specific rights, but the overlap helped make a universal declaration possible.
