Magna Carta's Afterlife: From Failure to Symbol

Magna Carta survived its failure because later governments found it useful. After John died in 1216, regents for the boy-king Henry III reissued a revised charter to win back rebel support, and further versions followed in 1217 and 1225. In 1297 Edward I confirmed it into the statute law of England. For centuries it was mostly a technical legal text, but in the 1600s lawyers such as Sir Edward Coke reinterpreted it as an ancient guarantee of English liberties against the Stuart kings, feeding into the Petition of Right of 1628.

American colonists later cited it against British rule, and its spirit is visible in the US Constitution's due process protections. Historians note that this reputation was partly a creation of later readers who found in it what they needed. Its afterlife shows how a document's influence can grow far beyond its authors' intentions.
