After Abolition: Legacies and Modern Slavery

Legal abolition did not end exploitation. After emancipation, many formerly enslaved people faced landlessness, debt, discriminatory laws and violence, and in the Americas systems such as sharecropping and convict leasing kept many in conditions close to bondage. Indentured labourers from India and China were shipped to plantations in the Caribbean, Mauritius and elsewhere, often under harsh contracts. The UDHR declared in 1948 that no one shall be held in slavery or servitude, and Mauritania became the last country to formally abolish slavery, in 1981.

Today forms such as forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage and human trafficking persist, and an international estimate published in 2022 put the number of people in modern slavery at about 50 million. Some argue that recognizing the historical legacy of slavery requires public acknowledgment, education or reparations, while others emphasize present-day anti-poverty and anti-trafficking measures; the debate continues. The history of abolition thus shows both real progress and unfinished work.
