Comparing Empires: Britain, France, Germany and Belgium

Comparing empires shows both common patterns and real differences. Britain held the largest empire, ranging from settler dominions such as Canada and Australia with self-government to India and African colonies ruled by small numbers of officials, often through indirect rule. France governed more centrally, promoted French language and culture and spoke of assimilation, but in practice granted citizenship to very few colonial subjects.

Germany's empire, acquired mostly in 1884–85 and lost after World War I, was short-lived but marked by extreme violence in Southwest and East Africa. Belgium's Congo began as a king's private possession before the Belgian state took over in 1908. Across these empires, colonized peoples faced land loss, forced labor, racial discrimination and limited political rights, yet experiences varied greatly by place, time and social position.

Historians caution against ranking empires as 'good' or 'bad', and instead compare specific policies, their effects and how colonized peoples responded to them.
