Factory Discipline and Clock Time

The factory changed not only where people worked but how they experienced time. In domestic work, families set their own pace, often working in bursts and resting when they chose. Factories ran expensive machines that earned money only while running, so owners imposed strict hours, bells, locked gates and fines for lateness, talking or poor work. Historian E. P. Thompson argued in a famous 1967 essay that industrial capitalism replaced 'task-oriented' time with 'clock time', teaching workers that 'time is money'.

Supporters of factories argued that regular hours and steady wages brought security; critics described the system as a loss of freedom and dignity. Workers responded in different ways, from accepting the routine to quietly resisting it or organizing for shorter hours. This change in time discipline is one of the industrial era's deepest and most lasting cultural effects.
