Reshaping the Land: The Netherlands and the Aral Sea

Humans are now one of the most powerful forces shaping Earth's surface, and two cases show both the promise and the risk. In the Netherlands, about a quarter of the land lies below sea level, reclaimed over centuries with dikes, pumps and drained polders. After a North Sea storm flood in 1953 killed more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands, the country built the Delta Works, a vast system of dams and storm barriers, and has since experimented with 'room for the river', deliberately letting some land flood safely.

In Central Asia, Soviet planners diverted the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers from the 1960s to irrigate cotton. The Aral Sea, once the world's fourth-largest lake, shrank dramatically, leaving fishing ports stranded, salty dust storms and health problems. Comparing the two shows how the same tool, water engineering, can protect a society or devastate a region depending on planning, monitoring and priorities.
