Heaven, Ancestors and Early Chinese Religion

Long before Confucius or Laozi, Chinese religious life centered on ancestors, spirits and Heaven. Under the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE), kings consulted ancestors and the high god Di by heating cattle shoulder blades and turtle shells and reading the cracks; questions and answers were carved on these 'oracle bones', the earliest substantial Chinese writing.

The Zhou dynasty, which overthrew the Shang in 1046 BCE, justified its rule through the Mandate of Heaven (Tian), the idea that Heaven grants power to virtuous rulers and withdraws it from corrupt ones. Families honored their ancestors with offerings, believing the living and dead remained bound by mutual obligation.

These ideas did not form a separate organized religion but ran through family, politics and daily life. They became the shared foundation on which Confucianism, Daoism and Chinese Buddhism later built, which is why Chinese religion is often described as a blended, rather than exclusive, tradition.
