Zhuangzi and Daoist Philosophy

After the Daodejing, the most important Daoist text is the Zhuangzi, named after a thinker who lived around the 4th century BCE. Unlike Laozi's brief verses, the Zhuangzi uses humorous stories, paradoxes and imaginary conversations to unsettle fixed ideas. In its most famous passage, Zhuangzi dreams he is a butterfly and, on waking, wonders whether he is a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he is a man.

The book questions whether human labels such as useful and useless, right and wrong, are absolute; a gnarled tree survives precisely because it is useless for timber. It describes skilled people, such as a cook whose knife never dulls because he follows the natural joints of an ox, as models of effortless harmony with the Dao. Zhuangzi's relativism and humor influenced Chinese art, poetry and, later, Chan Buddhism, offering freedom from rigid social expectations.
