Sacred Art and Symbols Across Traditions

Religious art does more than decorate; it teaches, inspires devotion and expresses beliefs that words struggle to capture. Traditions differ in their attitudes to images. Hindu temples overflow with sculpted deities, and Buddhist art developed images of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, often with symbolic hand gestures (mudras). Eastern Orthodox icons are understood as 'windows to heaven', painted according to strict conventions; the Byzantine Iconoclasm controversy (726–843) fought over whether such images were legitimate.

Judaism and Islam have generally avoided images of God in worship, so Islamic art developed calligraphy, geometric patterns and arabesques, while Jewish art flourished in illuminated manuscripts and ritual objects. Tibetan mandalas map the cosmos for meditation, and Sikh art centers on the scripture and the Gurus. Studying sacred art as a historical source reveals beliefs, patronage, trade and cultural exchange. Debates over images, from iconoclasm to the Protestant Reformation, show how art itself can become religiously contested.
