Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Word Cloud show?

Four kinds of related words, each in its own colour: similar words that mean nearly the same thing, words that often go with it, describing words (adjectives) that fit it, and words that rhyme. The bigger the word, the closer the match.

How can students use it?

To find a better word while writing, to build vocabulary around a topic before a lesson, to find rhymes for a poem, or simply to explore — tapping any word in the cloud makes it the new centre, and the word trail shows the path taken.

Is it safe for children?

Every word passes through a children's word filter before it is shown, and searches for unsuitable words show no cloud at all. Uncommon and archaic words are left out too, so the cloud stays useful for young readers.

Where do the words come from?

From the Datamuse word-finding service, which draws on dictionaries and large collections of everyday English. LittleActivity filters, sorts and sizes the results for students.
