Bonding, reactions and balancing equations — Take-Home — 10th Grade Predicts bond types, writes and balances equations, and explains balancing by conservation of atoms. This one-page 10th Grade take-home carries the two-minute check that tells you whether the skill is wobbly, then "Count the Atoms" — 30 minutes with paper, counters or beads in two colours — plus…

Why can't you just change the subscripts?" A SOLID ANSWER CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O, and knows subscripts define the substance itself. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 COUNT THE ATOMS You need: Paper, Counters or beads in two colours Model a reaction with beads: the same beads must appear on both sides, rearranged. Balance by counting each element in a table, one row per element. Show what happens if a subscript is changed — it becomes a different substance entirely. Balance five equations of increasing difficulty using the table method. Do a real one: vinegar and baking soda, weighed sealed to confirm conservation. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Changing the subscript makes it a different chemical. You can only change how many molecules there are." Two-element equations with a counting table. Combustion of larger hydrocarbons, and ionic equations.
