Human Impact SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. Human activity now changes Earth's systems at a scale comparable to natural processes. Burning fossil fuels adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere; clearing forests removes carbon sinks and destroys habitat; intensive agriculture releases methane and nitrous oxide and depletes soil; urban growth seals land and alters local water cycles. Plastic and chemical pollution spread through food chains, and species are being lost at rates far above the background fossil rate. The effects interact rather than adding up neatly — a warming climate pushes species towards the poles and to higher ground, but fragmented, developed landscapes block the routes. Because many impacts persist for centuries, the timing of action matters as much as its size. Questions: 1 Name three human activities that alter Earth's systems and say how. 2 Why does habitat fragmentation make warming worse for species? 3 Why does the timing of action matter? www.littleactivity.com 10th Grade · Science

Motion SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. Motion is a change in position, and describing it always requires a reference point. A passenger sitting on a train is not moving relative to the seat but is moving at 80 km/h relative to the platform, so neither answer is wrong — they use different frames of reference. Position, distance, and displacement are three different quantities: distance is the whole path travelled, while displacement is the straight-line change from start to finish, with a direction. A runner who completes one lap of a 400 m track has travelled 400 m of distance but has a displacement of zero. Speed uses distance; velocity uses displacement, which is why velocity can change even when speed does not. Questions: 1 Why can two people disagree about whether a train passenger is movin… 2 What is the displacement of a runner who finishes one full lap? 3 How do speed and velocity differ? www.littleactivity.com 10th Grade · Science

Functions SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. Functions are the language for describing how one quantity depends on another, and the notation f(x) means the output of the function f for the input x, not f multiplied by x. Linear functions change by a constant amount for each unit of input, so their graphs are straight lines and their tables have constant differences. Exponential functions multiply by a constant factor instead, so they start slowly and then rise steeply. Recognising which type a situation calls for is the practical skill: a flat fee plus a rate per hour is linear, while a population doubling each generation is exponential. Reading a graph well means naming both variables with units before saying anything about the shape. Questions: 1 What does f(x) mean, and what does it not mean? 2 How do linear and exponential functions differ? 3 What should you do before commenting on a graph's shape? www.littleactivity.com 10th Grade · Science

Non-Mendelian Inheritance SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. Inheritance is the passing of traits from parents to offspring through genes. Each parent contributes one copy of every gene, so offspring resemble their parents without being identical to either. Some traits are controlled by a single gene, but most — height, for example — are shaped by many genes together and by the environment as well. Traits acquired during a lifetime, such as a scar or a learned skill, are not inherited, because they do not change the genes that are passed on. Questions: 1 How many copies of each gene does a parent contribute? 2 Why is height not controlled by a single gene? 3 Why is a scar not inherited? www.littleactivity.com 10th Grade · Science

Momentum SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date Read the passage, then answer the questions below. Momentum is mass times velocity, p = mv, measured in kilogram metres per second. It explains why a slow, heavy object can be as hard to stop as a fast, light one: a 2,000 kg van at 5 m/s and a 50 kg scooter at 200 m/s both carry 10,000 kg·m/s. In a collision, total momentum is conserved, meaning the total before equals the total after, as long as no outside force acts. That is why a stationary ball moves off when struck and the striking ball slows. Because a force applied over time changes momentum, spreading a collision over a longer time lowers the force — the principle behind crumple zones and air bags. Questions: 1 Write the equation for momentum and give its unit. 2 What does it mean to say momentum is conserved in a collision? 3 Why do crumple zones reduce the force on passengers? www.littleactivity.com 10th Grade · Science

Atomic structure and periodic trends SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · 10th Grade 30 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Uses the periodic table to predict properties, and explains trends by electron arrangement. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Why is sodium more reactive than magnesium? Why does atomic radius shrink across a period?" A SOLID ANSWER Reasons about outer electrons and nuclear charge, not memorised statements. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 PREDICT BEFORE YOU LOOK You need: A periodic table, Paper Cover the data and predict which of two elements is more reactive, larger, or a better conductor. Write the reasoning before checking. Check against real data and mark where the reasoning failed, not just the answer. Draw electron arrangements for the first twenty elements and connect them to group behaviour. Find real-world evidence: why sodium is stored in oil, why noble gases fill light bulbs. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Don't tell me the trend — tell me why the trend has to be that way." Predict within one group. Explain an anomaly in a trend and find out why it exists. Bonding, reactions and balancing equations SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · 10th Grade 30 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Predicts bond types, writes and balances equations, and explains balancing by conservation of atoms. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Balance the combustion of methane. Why can't you just change the subscripts?" A SOLID ANSWER CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O, and knows subscripts define the substance itself. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 COUNT THE ATOMS You need: Paper, Counters or beads in two colours Model a reaction with beads: the same beads must appear on both sides, rearranged. Balance by counting each element in a table, one row per element. Show what happens if a subscript is changed — it becomes a different substance entirely. Balance five equations of increasing difficulty using the table method. Do a real one: vinegar and baking soda, weighed sealed to confirm conservation. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Changing the subscript makes it a different chemical. You can only change how many molecules there are." Two-element equations with a counting table. Combustion of larger hydrocarbons, and ionic equations. Moles, concentration and acids and bases SCIENCE · 10TH GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · 10th Grade 30 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Uses the mole as a counting unit, calculates concentration, and explains the pH scale. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "How many moles in 36 g of water? How many times more acidic is pH 3 than pH 6?" A SOLID ANSWER 2 moles, and 1,000 times — knowing the scale is logarithmic. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 COUNT BY WEIGHING You need: Kitchen scales, Rice or paperclips, Red cabbage indicator, Household liquids Weigh 100 grains of rice, then use the mass to count a bag without counting — that's exactly the mole idea. Apply it: molar mass lets you count atoms by weighing. Calculate moles for three real substances from the kitchen. Make a red cabbage indicator and test household liquids, ranking them by colour. Dilute one tenfold, retest, and see the pH move by one — the logarithmic scale, demonstrated. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "You counted the rice by weighing it. That's the whole idea of the mole — nothing more mysterious than that." Mole calculations from given molar masses. Stoichiometry: predict the mass of product from a given mass of reactant.
