Graph the temperatures as a line graph. Work out the average and compare it to the typical value for your area and month. Ask: does one cold day tell you anything about the climate? Compare your data to a different country's for the same fortnight. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "One day is weather. What do you need to know the climate — a day, a month, or thirty years?" The five senses and describing words SCIENCE · PRE-K Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · Pre-K 10 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Names the sense they are using and offers a word for what they notice. For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK Hand them something textured. "What does it feel like? What are you using to find out?" A SOLID ANSWER One describing word beyond nice/yucky, and "my hands" or "touching". Not yet Getting there Solid 2 MYSTERY BAG You need: A bag or pillowcase, Four household objects Hide four objects — a sponge, a spoon, a pinecone, an orange. They reach in without looking and describe before guessing: "It's bumpy and cold." Feed them the word when they're stuck: "That's rough. Say rough." Guess, then pull it out to check. Do a smell round with the fridge open, and a sound round with your eyes closed. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Don't tell me what it is yet — tell me what it feels like." Two objects that feel completely different — a rock and a feather. They describe an object for you to guess. Producing the description is much harder than recognising it. Weather and the seasons SCIENCE · PRE-K Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · Pre-K 5 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Describes today's weather and picks clothing that matches it. For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Look out of the window. What's the weather doing? What should we wear?" A SOLID ANSWER An accurate word — sunny, rainy, windy, cold — and a sensible clothing choice. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 WEATHER WINDOW You need: A window, Paper and crayons if you want a chart Same time every day, look out and say the weather in one word. Draw a tiny symbol on a piece of paper stuck to the fridge — sun, cloud, raindrop. Let them choose one thing to wear because of it. Let a wrong choice play out if it's harmless. At the end of a week, count the sunny days versus the rainy days. That is a graph. Talk about what the trees are doing this season while you're at it. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "It's raining, so what do we need? You decide." Two choices only: "Is it sunny or rainy?" Ask them to predict tomorrow, then check whether they were right. Living and non-living, and what plants need SCIENCE · KINDERGARTEN Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · Kindergarten 10 minutes to set up,… WHAT THIS BUILDS Sorts things into living and non-living with a reason, and knows plants need water, light and air. For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Is a tree alive? Is a car alive? How can you tell?" A SOLID ANSWER Both right, plus a reason: it grows, it needs food or water, it makes babies. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 TWO BEAN EXPERIMENT You need: Two dried beans, Two jars or cups, Cotton wool or kitchen roll, Water Set up two identical beans on damp cotton wool in jars. One goes on the windowsill and gets water. One goes in a dark cupboard with none. Predict out loud before anything happens, and write the prediction down. Look every couple of days and draw what's changed — drawing forces close looking. After two weeks, ask what the difference proves. That is a controlled experiment, at five. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "What do you think will happen? Let's write it down so we can check if we were right." Grow one bean only and just watch it change. Run three: no water, no light, and everything. Then work out which factor did what. Pushes, pulls, and what things are made of SCIENCE · KINDERGARTEN Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · Kindergarten 10 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Describes a movement as a push or a pull, and sorts materials as hard, soft, bendy, or see-through. For the grown-up: say every prompt out loud. Nothing on this sheet asks the child to read or write. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Open the door. Was that a push or a pull? What's the door made of?" A SOLID ANSWER The right force word and a material word — wood, metal, plastic, glass. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 PUSH, PULL, RAMP You need: A tray or a plank for a ramp, Toy car, Books to raise it Go round the house naming pushes and pulls — a zip, a drawer, a switch, a swing. Set up a ramp with one book under it and roll the car. Mark where it stops. Raise it to three books. Predict first, then roll and mark. Ask why the steeper ramp sent it further. Try the car on carpet versus a hard floor and name the difference — that's friction, and you can use the word. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Was that a push or a pull? What do you think happens if we make it steeper?" Just push and pull things and name each one as you go. Measure the distances in blocks and put the results in order. Light and sound SCIENCE · 1ST GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · 1st Grade 15 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Knows that sound comes from vibration and that we see things because light bounces off them. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Why can't you see anything in a completely dark room?" and "What's actually moving when a drum makes a sound?" A SOLID ANSWER Some version of "there's no light to bounce" and "the drum skin is shaking". Not yet Getting there Solid 2 FEEL THE SOUND, BOUNCE THE LIGHT You need: A bowl with cling film and some rice or salt, A torch, A mirror Stretch cling film over a bowl and sprinkle rice on top. Bang a pan next to it — the rice jumps. Let them put fingers on their throat and hum. That's the same vibration. In a dark room, shine a torch at a mirror and bounce the beam onto the ceiling. Ask them to predict where the beam will land before you move the mirror. Make shadows and test what changes the size — that's a whole extra lesson for free. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "Put your fingers on your throat and hum. Feel that? Sound is something shaking." Just the rice and the humming. Feeling the vibration is the core idea. Test which materials block light completely, partly, or not at all, and sort them. How plants and animals survive SCIENCE · 1ST GRADE Name Date TAKE-HOME PRACTICE Science · 1st Grade 15 minutes WHAT THIS BUILDS Explains how an animal's body parts help it survive, and that young animals resemble their parents. 1 THE TWO-MINUTE CHECK ASK "Why does a duck have webbed feet? Why does a cactus have spikes instead of leaves?" A SOLID ANSWER A purpose for each, even a rough one — swimming, protection, saving water. Not yet Getting there Solid 2 DESIGN AN ANIMAL You need: Paper, Crayons Pick a hard place to live: the desert, the deep sea, the Arctic. List what's difficult about it: no water, no light, no warmth. They design an animal for it and label each body part with its job. Compare with a real animal that lives there and see what nature did instead. Look at a young animal and its parent in photos, and list what's the same. SAY THIS WHEN IT STALLS "What is that part *for*? Everything on an animal has a job." Look at a real pet or a bird outside and name three body parts and their jobs. Explain why the same animal would die somewhere else, feature by feature.
