Finding a Delayed Thesis

Locate a thesis that appears after an opening story, question, or opposing view rather than in the first paragraph.

Many sophisticated essays do not state their thesis in the first sentence or even the first paragraph. They may open with an anecdote, a question, a common belief they intend to challenge, or a puzzle. The thesis arrives later, often signaled by a turn word such as 'but,' 'yet,' 'however,' or 'the truth is. ' Consider an original opening: 'For decades, people have believed that multitasking makes us efficient. Offices reward it; job ads demand it.

Yet the research tells a different story: switching between tasks costs time and accuracy, and the habit may be quietly eroding our ability to focus. ' The first two sentences describe a view the author will dispute. The thesis follows 'Yet. ' A careless reader who assumes the first sentence is the thesis will misreport the author's position entirely. When reading, look for the pivot where the author's own voice takes over from the view being described.

• 1Theses often follow an anecdote, question, or opposing view.
• 2Turn words such as 'yet' or 'however' often signal them.
• 3Do not mistake a described view for the author's view.
