Easy as PIE

Remember the three purposes with the word PIE.

An easy way to remember the three main purposes is the word PIE. P is for persuade: the author wants you to do or believe something. I is for inform: the author wants to teach you facts. E is for entertain: the author wants you to enjoy it.

Let's sort three texts. 'Vote for Mia for class helper! ' is P. 'The sun is a star' is I. 'The moon wore sunglasses to the beach' is E. When you finish reading, think 'P, I, or E? ' and pick the one that fits best.

• 1P = persuade.
• 2I = inform.
• 3E = entertain.
