Stop and Reread When You're Confused

Notice when reading stops making sense and fix it.

Good readers notice when something doesn't make sense. Maybe you read a whole page and can't remember it, or a sentence sounds wrong. That is your signal to stop. Then fix it. Go back and reread the part that confused you, slowly.

Check any word you might have misread. Say you read: 'The dog chewed on a boat. ' That doesn't make sense! You look again, more slowly, and see the word is 'bone', not 'boat'. 'The dog chewed on a bone' makes sense.

Reading is about meaning, so never just keep going when you're lost.
