A new student joined our class in October. His name was Omar. He had just moved from another country. He did not speak much English yet. He looked shy. Our teacher said we should make him feel welcome. I decided to sit next to him at lunch. I showed him where things were. I drew pictures when we could not find the right words. Omar smiled. He started to relax. He had an enormous smile. I introduced him to my friends. We played soccer at recess. Omar was very good. We invited him to play every day. Gradually he learned more English. He told us about his old school. He said he missed his friends. But he was glad to be here. Perhaps we could not fix everything. But we could be kind. I had discovered that a little kindness goes a long way. Omar was now one of my best friends. The journey had been worth it.
