Our class got pen pals from another country. My pen pal was a girl named Yuki. She lived in Japan. We wrote letters every month. I told her about my school. I told her about my family. She told me about her life. I had discovered that someone far away could become a friend. Gradually we learned about each other. We sent pictures. We sent small gifts. I had never had an experience like that. I had considered that writing letters was old-fashioned. I was wrong. Writing letters was special. The opportunity to connect with someone across the world was a gift. Yuki's letters were magnificent. She wrote about cherry blossoms. She wrote about her favorite food. I wrote about my dog. We had never met. But we were friends. I was excited every time a letter came. I would never forget my pen pal. Perhaps one day we would meet. Until then we would keep writing. The pen pal had opened my eyes to the world.
