Long ago, people did not use letters. They drew pictures to tell stories. Later, some cultures made symbols that stood for sounds or words. The alphabet we use today came from ideas that were used long ago. First people wrote on stone or clay. Then paper was invented. Now we also type on computers. Writing helps us share ideas across time and distance.
