World War II was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involving most of the world's nations. It began when Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland, prompting Britain and France to declare war. The war was fought between two major alliances: the Allies, which included countries like the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom, and the Axis powers, primarily Germany, Italy, and Japan. One significant event was the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, where Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base in Hawaii. This led to the U.S. joining the war. The conflict caused immense destruction and loss of life, ultimately leading to the defeat of the Axis powers in 1945. The war ended with the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to Japan's surrender and marking a pivotal moment in history.
