Primary and Secondary Sources

Distinguish firsthand sources from interpretations and know what each is good for.

A primary source is a firsthand record created at the time of an event or by someone directly involved: a diary, a speech, an original photograph, a data set, a court record, an interview. A secondary source analyzes, interprets, or summarizes primary sources from a later vantage point: a textbook chapter, a biography, a documentary, a review article. Neither is automatically better. Primary sources offer immediacy and detail but reflect one perspective and may lack context.

Secondary sources offer context and synthesis but depend on the author's selection and interpretation. Worked example: a researcher studying a 1930s drought reads a farmer's letter describing dust storms (primary) and a historian's book explaining the drought's causes across several states (secondary). The letter shows how the disaster felt to one family; the book explains its scale and causes. Using both gives depth and breadth. When reading, identify which kind of source you have, and ask what it can and cannot tell you.
