The Haber Process

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Nitrogen and hydrogen combine reversibly to make ammonia, exothermically and with fewer gas molecules on the product side. The industrial compromise is about 450 °C, 200 atmospheres and an iron catalyst — not the yield-optimal conditions, but the ones that give acceptable yield fast enough.

Key words

Haber process
The industrial synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen.
compromise conditions
Conditions chosen to balance yield against rate and cost.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "Haber process" and "compromise conditions" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Given yield data at several temperatures and pressures, identify the conditions that maximise yield. Then explain in writing why industry does not use them, naming the rate and cost factors that override yield.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A lower temperature would increase ammonia yield but is not used because it:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

High pressure favours ammonia production because the product side has:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
