Accurate Measurement of Volume and Mass

Lab Brief #3

🎯 Your mission

Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Read a liquid volume at the bottom of the meniscus with your eye level with the mark. Use a pipette for a fixed accurate volume and a burette for a variable one. Weighing by difference — before and after transfer — avoids the error left by residue in the boat.

Key words

meniscus
The curved surface of a liquid, read at its lowest point for most liquids.
weighing by difference
Finding a transferred mass by subtracting the container's final mass from its initial mass.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

beaker
measuring cylinder
pipette and filler
balance
water

⚠️ Safety first

Use a pipette filler, never mouth suction.
Check glassware for chips before use.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "meniscus" and "weighing by difference" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Measure 25 cm³ of water with a beaker, a measuring cylinder and a pipette, weighing each delivery. Compare each mass against the expected 25 g and rank the three methods by accuracy.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

A liquid volume should be read at the:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Weighing by difference avoids error caused by:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
