Recording, Tabulating and Reporting

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

A good results table has the independent variable in the first column, headed with its unit, repeats side by side and a mean column. Record what you observed, not what you expected, and state uncertainties. A result you cannot reproduce from your own notes is not a result.

Key words

results table
A structured record with headed columns, units and space for repeats and means.
raw data
The measurements as recorded, before any processing or averaging.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "results table" and "raw data" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Take a badly presented set of results with missing units, inconsistent decimal places and no repeats, and redraft it as a proper table. List every fault you corrected and why each mattered.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Units in a results table belong:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

You should record:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
