Materials That Block Sound

Lab Brief #13

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

The first design always fails. That's the point.

What you'll learn

Soft, thick and uneven materials absorb sound energy instead of reflecting it, which is why a carpeted room sounds quieter than a tiled one. Hard flat surfaces bounce sound back and make echoes.

Key words

absorb
To take in sound energy rather than reflect it.
echo
A sound heard again after bouncing off a hard surface.

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: what's the weakest part of this build?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

cardboard box
phone with sound level app
speaker
cloth
foam
aluminium foil

Get ready

⚠️ Safety first

Keep the tone quiet — sustained loud sound damages hearing.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "absorb" and "echo" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Play a steady tone into a box and measure the sound level outside it with a phone app. Repeat with the box lined with cloth, then foam, then foil, and rank the four linings.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Which material would absorb the most sound?

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Echoes are produced by surfaces that are:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
