Quadrats and Estimating Populations

Lab Brief #2

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Constraints make you more creative, not less.

What you'll learn

Counting every organism in a field is impossible, so ecologists count within randomly placed quadrats and scale up by area. Random placement matters: putting quadrats where the plants look best guarantees an overestimate.

Key words

quadrat
A square frame of known area used to sample organisms in a habitat.
random sampling
Choosing sample locations by chance so the sample represents the whole area.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you test: how many tries until it works?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

quadrat frame
tape measures
random number source
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Wash hands after handling soil and plants, and check the area for broken glass first.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "quadrat" and "random sampling" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Place ten quadrats at random coordinates on a lawn, count one species in each, and scale to the whole area. Then deliberately place ten more where that species looks densest and compare the two estimates.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Quadrats must be placed randomly to avoid:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Ten quadrats of 1 m² in a 500 m² field sampled:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🛠️ The first computer bug was a literal moth stuck inside a machine in 1947.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
