Measuring Distance in Space

Lab Brief #8

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Up there, the rules of down here stop working.

What you'll learn

Nearby stars are measured by parallax: their apparent shift against the background as Earth moves round its orbit. Further out, astronomers use standard candles — objects of known real brightness — and compare that with how bright they appear.

Key words

parallax
The apparent shift of a nearby object against a distant background when the observer moves.
standard candle
An object of known true brightness, whose apparent brightness therefore reveals its distance.

Make a hypothesis first

Predict: what would happen on the moon vs. on Earth?

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

🧰 What you need

metre rule
wall scale
notebook

⚠️ Safety first

Hold the metre rule clear of faces when you sight along it.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "parallax" and "standard candle" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Hold a thumb at arm's length and blink each eye in turn to see parallax shift, then repeat with the thumb held close. Measure the shift both times against a distant wall scale and explain why a larger shift means a closer object.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 3

Parallax shift is larger for stars that are:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 3

A standard candle is useful because its:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 3 of 3

Parallax uses the change in viewpoint caused by:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🪐 A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 3 right.

🌍 Where you see this in real life: GPS, weather forecasts, and the seasons all rely on this.

🏆 Stretch challenge (try it this week): Find a constellation in the sky. Look it up. Tell someone its story.
