What You'll Learn

Nearby stars are measured by parallax: their apparent shift against the background as Earth moves round its orbit. Further out, astronomers use standard candles — objects of known real brightness — and compare that with how bright they appear.

Steps

Step 1 — Read

Hold a thumb at arm's length and blink each eye alternately to see the parallax shift. Measure the shift angle for two thumb distances and show that a closer object shifts more.
