How Sound Is Produced and Carried

Lab Brief #1

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Sound begins with something vibrating. The vibration pushes nearby particles together into compressions and lets them spread into rarefactions, and this pattern travels outwards. Without particles there is nothing to compress, so sound cannot cross a vacuum.

Key words

compression
A region of a longitudinal wave where particles are pushed closer together.
rarefaction
A region of a longitudinal wave where particles are spread further apart.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

ruler
tuning fork
bowl of water

⚠️ Safety first

Strike the tuning fork on a rubber bung, never on a hard surface or the bench.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "compression" and "rarefaction" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Rest a ruler on a desk edge and twang it, shortening the overhang each time. Feel the desk vibrate, then touch a sounding tuning fork to water and watch it splash. Record what stops in each case when the vibration stops.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because a vacuum has no:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

A region where particles are pushed together in a sound wave is a:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
