The Particle Model and Gas Pressure

Lab Brief #4

🎯 Your mission

Set it up. Test it. Be amazed.

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

Gas pressure comes from particles colliding with container walls. Heat the gas and the particles move faster, hitting harder and more often, so pressure rises. Shrink the container and collisions become more frequent, which is the origin of Boyle's law.

Key words

gas pressure
The force per unit area exerted by particle collisions with a container wall.
absolute zero
The lowest possible temperature, 0 K or −273 °C, where particle motion is minimal.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

sealed syringe
pressure gauge
clamp

⚠️ Safety first

Do not force the plunger past the gauge's range.
Wear eye protection in case a connection blows off.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "gas pressure" and "absolute zero" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Seal a syringe of air and press the plunger to half its volume while reading a pressure gauge. Record pressure against volume for five positions and check whether the product pV stays roughly constant.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

Halving a gas's volume at constant temperature makes its pressure:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Absolute zero is approximately:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
