Insulation and Rates of Cooling

Lab Brief #5

🎯 Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

⚡ The twist

Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.

What you'll learn

The rate at which an object cools depends on the temperature difference with its surroundings, its surface area, and how well it is insulated. Trapped air is the key to most insulation, because still air conducts heat poorly.

Key words

thermal conductivity
How readily a material conducts thermal energy.
rate of cooling
How quickly temperature falls, greatest when the temperature difference is largest.

Make a hypothesis first

Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.

Say your guess out loud — then find out if you were right.

Get ready

🧰 What you need

four identical cans
bubble wrap
newspaper
aluminium foil
thermometers
stopwatch

Get ready

⚠️ Safety first

Have an adult pour the hot water and use a tray to catch spills.

Step 1 of 4 · Read

Think about what you just learned: say what "thermal conductivity" and "rate of cooling" mean in your own words before you start.

Step 2 of 4 · Do

Fill four identical cans with hot water, insulating them with bubble wrap, newspaper, foil and nothing. Record temperature every two minutes for twenty minutes and plot all four cooling curves on one axis.

Step 3 of 4 · Observe

Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.

Step 4 of 4 · Record

Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.

Question 1 of 2

An object cools fastest when the temperature difference with its surroundings is:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Question 2 of 2

Most insulators work by trapping:

How sure are you?😐 maybe

Mind = blown

🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.

Nice work!

You got 0 of 2 right.
