Toussaint Louverture: Leadership Compared

Toussaint Louverture, born enslaved around 1743 and freed before the revolution, became its most famous leader. He fought first alongside Spain against France, then switched to the French Republic in 1794 after it abolished slavery, and defeated British and Spanish forces as well as rivals within the colony. By 1801 he governed Saint-Domingue under a constitution naming him governor for life, though still nominally under France. His leadership invites comparison.

Like Washington, he was a skilled military organizer who built a disciplined army. Like Napoleon, he concentrated power and ruled through the army. To restore the economy, he required former slaves to keep working on plantations for wages, a policy that kept labor tightly controlled and angered many. His choices reveal a dilemma common to revolutionary leaders: securing freedom and survival sometimes meant using coercion.
