Jewish practice weaves religion into everyday life through mitzvot, commandments. The Sabbath (Shabbat), from sunset Friday to nightfall Saturday, commemorates God resting after creation and the freedom from slavery; it begins with candles, blessings over wine and bread (challah), and family meals. Observant Jews refrain from work on Shabbat, which rabbinic law defines through 39 categories of creative labor, such as lighting fires or writing.

Kashrut, the dietary laws, permits certain animals, forbids pork and shellfish, requires a particular method of slaughter, and separates meat and dairy. Supporters describe these practices as holiness in daily life and a 'palace in time', while others observe them partly or adapt them, reflecting differences among Jewish movements. Practices like the mezuzah on doorposts and prayer three times daily keep scripture present in ordinary spaces and hours, showing how Judaism emphasizes action as well as belief.
