The Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe

1. Somebody LIVES in a SHOE?
2. She does. A very big shoe, with a chimney in the heel.
3. And rather a lot of children.
4. How many? Let's find out.
5. There's a woman in a boot with a door in the toe,
6. And a window in the buckle and a garden below.
7. She's got children in the laces and children on the tongue,
8. And she counts every one of them before the day is done!
9. How many? So many! And every single one gets a name!
10. Count 'em at the table, count 'em in the frame!
11. Some are very tall and some are very small,
12. But she knows every single one and she loves them all!
13. Four in the kitchen with the flour on their hands,
14. Four in the garden making little sandy lands,
15. Four on the doorstep and four on the stair —
16. Count 'em up in fours and you'll find them all there!
17. How many? So many! Sixteen and counting on!
18. Four fours make sixteen and the counting's not done!
19. Group 'em into fours and the counting goes fast,
20. Every single child from the first to the last!
21. Sixteen is a lot to count one at a time.
22. So we make little groups. Four here. Four there.
23. Four, and four, is…
24. …Six?
25. Ooh — four and four is eight. Count on from four: five, six, seven, eight.
26. And eight and eight is sixteen.
27. Grouping turns a scary number into a small job. That's why we do it.
28. There's a first and a second and a third on the mat,
29. There's a fourth and a fifth and a sixth with a cat,
30. Seventh is the loud one — (BO: THAT'S ME!) — and eighth is the quiet,
31. Every single number and she never gets it wrong!
32. Number one! CHILD 1: Here!
33. Number five! CHILD 5: Here!
34. Number seven! BO: HERE!
35. Number sixteen! CHILD 16: (tiny) …here.
36. How many? So many! And every one is here!
37. Fifteen. Not sixteen. Somebody is missing.
38. How can she tell? There's SO MANY!
39. Because she counts every night. And she knows what sixteen feels like.
40. There. Sixteen. Now everyone can go to bed.
41. Everybody up! We're going to count in groups!
42. Clap four times! One-two-three-four! That's one group!
43. Clap four more! That's two groups — that's eight!
44. Four more — twelve! Four more — SIXTEEN!
45. Now stomp sixteen times. You'll need to group them or you'll lose count!
46. Two groups of five. How many altogether?
47. ADA: Ten.
48. Three groups of two. How many?
49. ADA: Six. Two, four, six.
50. Sixteen children. One goes to a friend's house. How many at home?
51. ADA: Fifteen. And she'll notice. She always notices.
52. How many? So many! And every single one gets a name!
53. Sixteen at the table and they never get the same!
54. Counted in the morning and counted into bed,
55. Every single number and a kiss on every head!
56. She ties the lace across the doorway. That's the front door shut.
