Day 129 of 180Week 26 of 36, ThursdayThird quarter

Compare two graphs

๐Ÿ”ข Math๐Ÿ” Practiseโฑ๏ธ about 20 minutes

Look at two charts and say what is different about the data, not just the bars.

Reps on something already met. Short, and worth doing even on a bad evening.

Today is rung 6 of 8 on this topic

Measuring in standard units and graphing results

Can do: Measures in centimetres and inches, estimates before measuring, and builds a bar graph from real data.

Why it matters

Estimation is the skill that catches errors for the rest of their life. A graph is the first time a child answers a question with data they collected.

What it looks like when it's wobbly

No sense of size โ€” guesses a door is 20 cm tall โ€” and reads a graph without checking the scale.

โฑ๏ธ Two-minute check

"Estimate this table in centimetres, then measure it." Then read any bar chart with a scale of 2.

Solid looks like: An estimate in the right ballpark, and a graph value read using the scale, not the bar count.

Guess, Measure, Graph

Ruler or tape measureSquared paper
  1. 1Write down an estimate for five objects before touching a ruler.
  2. 2Measure each one and write the real value next to the guess.
  3. 3Work out how far off each estimate was โ€” that's subtraction with a purpose.
  4. 4Graph the five real lengths as bars.
  5. 5Ask three questions off the graph, including one about the difference between two bars.

If it's too hard

Measure in whole centimetres and graph with one square per unit.

If it's too easy

Use a scale where one square equals two units, which is where most misreadings happen.

Say this

"Guess first, then measure. Being wrong is how your guessing gets good."
